Penguin Divers
Diving is an exhilarating sport which blends bold adventure, brilliant colours and an aquatic universe of weightless exploration. Skirting the Red Sea, Dahab’s position among four of Egypt’s 15 protected coral reefs, makes it a dramatic diving destination of fish, sea creatures, ship wrecks and coral reefs. Since 1997, Penguin has partnered with PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) to provide our guests with professional courses and excursions to release any level scuba diver into the underwater world. Tranquil and tacit or splashed with adventure and adrenaline, diving in Dahab means 480 sq km of fun in the sun.

Please note that all diving courses described below require a medical questionnaire, Liability Release, and a Safe Diving Statement.

Ros Mohammed Jeep and Boat Safari

Ras Mohammed is not only the largest natural structure known to man, it is also one of the world's most extraordinary settings: a slender, dramatically arid peninsula at the very Southernmost tip of the Sinai, rising to a dramatic promontory that looks out over some of the most gloriously rich coral reefs that you will ever see.

penguin divers

Ras Mohammed was declared
a national park in 1983.
The boundaries of Ras Mohammed extend far out into the surrounding waters and even the most casual of visitors is awe-struck by how much of the park is dominated by the sea. Even the dry land area of the park seems a part of the marine world.

For many visitors, Ras Mohammed's most stunning scenery is found underwater, in the broad, terraced coral reefs that encircle the beautiful peninsula. Here you can see fire corals and brilliant sea fans.

We depart from Dahab at 7:00am by jeep then either transfer onto a luxury boat at Sharm for 2 dives or to do 2 dives from the shore of the national park. Have a buffet lunch in between the dives and then we return at 6:00pm that evening. These boat/jeep safaris leave at least twice a week to Ras Mohammed National Park.

Thistelgorm Boat Safari

The Thistlegorm is a British ship which was attacked by the Germans on 5 - 6 October 1940. By the light of the full moon the German pilots spotted the convoy and decided to attack the ship which appeared to be carrying the biggest cargo.

penguin divers

The Thistlegorm wreck lies in the stretch of sea between the Sha'af Ali Reef and the West Coast of Sinai, north of Ras Mohammed in the Strait of Gobal.
The safari leaves Dahab around 10:00pm arriving 1 hour later in Sharm Port to spend the night on the boat. At sunrise the boat departs for the wreck, which is identified by GPS and sonic depth finder.

The guide usually moors the boat by tying a cable to 1 of the huge structures on the main deck of the wreck. Doing 2 dives - 1 outside the wreck and 1 inside.

It is difficult to say how many dives are needed to explore the wreck completely, there are so many thrilling things to see that nobody ever wants to leave the wreck behind. After making the 2 dives, a buffet lunch is served, as the boat moves back to Ras Mohammed, to do a 3rd relaxed dive at Sharks Reef and Yolanda. The boat returns to Sharm and then it is back to Dahab by car

Abu Galum Camel Safari
Ras Abu Gallum is a managed resource protected area located to the north between Dahab and Nuweiba covering an area of 400km. The coastal area contains undisturbed coral reef with high diversities of coral reef fish.

The reef at Ras Abu Gallum supports an active Bedouin artisanal fishery, where Bedouin fishermen practice subsistence fishing and supply restaurants and families with fish.
penguin divers

The safari begins at Penguin Divers meeting at 7:00am for coffee and to load the cars with our diving equipment. Heading off for a 20 minute drive to the Blue Hole where we meet our camels and the Bedouin guide, one camel for each diver. 90 minutes along the beach by camel, you will start to see Ras Abu Gallum half way, getting excited as you get closer to the Bedouin huts and dozens of small Wadi's which run down from the mountains of Ras Abu Gallum to plunge right into the sea.

Having tea while relaxing and chatting after the trip, we prepare for the first dive after which we will rest and have our lunch before our second dive. We then head back to the Blue Hole by camel and back to Penguin Divers with a big smile

Gabr el Bint
This safari, like the one to Ras Abu Gallum, can be done over 1 or 2 days and involves a journey by camel from where the road ends south of Dahab to approx 7.5 kms south to Gabr el Bint, which literally translates as ‘The Tomb of the Girl’.

The remains of a young nomadic Bedouin girl can still be seen in a cave deep in the rock, it is believed she took ill many centuries ago, while travelling and was buried at this beautiful spot, at the foot of the mountains

Eel Garden

Diving at Eel Garden has been described as diving on some strange planet. It requires the perfect conditions to perform the dive safely, both for the diver and the environment that is being entered. The most famous stars of Eel Garden are the sand eels that wave in the current like shiny silver ribbons. These reclusive creatures are a treat to observe and there by the hundreds, found in the 12 to 25 metre range.

penguin divers

Eel Garden also boasts some incredible coral walls and a beautiful L-shaped pinnacle with various soft corals and other more lively denizens. For the more advanced diver, there is also the unforgettable drift dive from Eel Garden to Lighthouse. This is at least an hour of dive time, so you really need to be good on air to do the dive.

The lighthouse is known as the training-site of Dahab and shows us an incredible reef. It has a sandy slope that is ideal for shallow water diving and for beginner divers, but holds many secrets that the true local expert can show you. It has excellent topography for deep dives, with some beautiful pinnacles, grassy fields, and coral colonies. There are also areas that the rare green Sea Turtle can be found, if you know where to look. Some of the most photogenic spots in Dahab can be found steps from the city’s centre. Unicorn and parrot fish are prominent, as well as lionfish and moray eels. Lighthouse is an expansive, mysterious place and somewhere Bob can almost always be found. Even people that dive there hundreds of dives, discover something new and exciting every time they dive. And in between dives, you relax with a cup of tea and some lunch at one of the many cosy sea side restaurants

The Moray Garden

site is also known as ‘Shark’s cave’. We have no idea why because there are no sharks at all,
penguin divers
but only many giant moray eels, especially in the northern area. Entering the water is easy from the shingle beach and protected from the waves. There is a huge variety in underwater landscape and fish life. The diving route permits exploration of another dive site which is situated about a hundred meters further to the north called Golden Blocks.

Golden Blocks
Golden Blocks got its name from the two hard coral towers of a golden colour that you can see from the shore at low tide. On this dive you will see an extensive area with sea grass, and a very interesting reef area. This has numerous pinnacles around which shoals of fusiliers and trevallies swarm. North are the Golden Blocks.

You can either get out here (at Moray Garden) or if you still have air left, return to the point of entry at Golden Blocks.

3 Pools

This site is south of Moray Gardens / Golden Blocks. The name derives from the three real natural pools formed in the reef plateau that have a sandy bottom with a depth between 3 and 4 meters aligned one after the other. On this dive you will see small Red Sea Moses soles, half hidden in the sand,

and a hard coral slope with massive pore corals and small pinnacles between which there are salad corals and brain corals and perhaps a nudibranch. It is easy diving that offers an opportunity to admire an incredible variety of hard and soft corals. Snorkelers will have a great time in the three pools.

Umm Sid

This dive site lies to the south of Dahab, about half an hour away by jeep. It has the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere.

penguin divers

In fact, there is really nothing around except for the Sinai Mountains at your back, the Red Sea, and the mountains of Saudi Arabia that can be seen in the distance. The entrance here is a small pool that allows access to a sandy slope and reef wall. There are numerous table corals, a small garden of sand eels swaying the in the currents, and of course beautiful stretches of coral that will leave you coming south again for a second day of diving. Good things come to those that go the extra mile.

Bells / Blue Hole

The Blue Hole, Bells, Scuba Diving - all three words have become a triptych description to what scuba divers have known for years – Dahab is the place to be for some memorable scuba diving. The staff at Octopus Divers would disagree strongly that the Blue Hole is the best dive site in Dahab (we all have our little secrets), but people from around the world keep asking to dive Bells/Blue Hole and there is a reason for this. The site is typically geared towards the advanced divers,
penguin divers
but those wanting shallow dives would have an excellent time exploring the outer rim of the Blue Hole – assuming one does not get troubled looking down a sheer 600 metre wall of coral and rock. For the advanced diver, the entry is will be the ‘bells’. Think of Quasimodo as you manoeuvre the tower’s shaft to a depth of 28 metres. Upon exiting you remember the grace that scuba divers are privy to and hover along a wall dropping to over half a kilometre within a few steps from the shore. Drifting to the saddle of the famous Blue Hole, where you will exit and end the dive, you will pass incredible coral gardens, over-hangs, and many different species of marine life. Watch out for the odd shark in the morning, or turtle in the afternoon, or vertigo when getting through the Blue Hole :) There remain two other ways to dive the Blue Hole...well three, but we won’t go into the third. The two guide-able ways are possible if ask real nice or you happen to be a Diver from Turkey (Hello Nesib!) who doesn’t want to do anything but Canyon / Blue Hole for three days straight.

Canyon

This spectacular dive site is one of Egypt’s most famous and is extremely popular. It is a deep crack in the sea floor that was formed by an earthquake in the Gulf of Aqaba. This dive appeals most to those who love cavern diving. The Canyon is famous for its teeny tiny dentists. Open your mouth and these little fish –labroides dimidiatus-will come and pick up anything that the toothbrush left behind.
penguin divers
In shallow areas it is possible to see the Red Sea walkman, garden eels and sea moths. The entrance of The Canyon is at about 15 metres where you will emerge into a large glassfish and goldfish filled coral dome known as the Fishbowl which has three entrance / exit points then sloping down until two more entrance/ exit points; one at 30 metres the other at 52 metres. As you descend into the site you will notice fascinating light effects.

The Islands

The Islands is a labyrinthine playground located to the south of Dahab. This site is home to diverse variety of coral types which are most extremely well preserved. Here you can see such awesome marine life as yellowtail barracuda, twinspot snapper and sometimes even dolphins.
penguin divers
The coral is also amazing and here you will see porites and very large brain corals. Just more than a decade ago an earthquake caused some sections of the reef to collapse and this has exposed cracks and holes which are now becoming filled up with new coral life. The earthquake is also responsible for the grey coral graveyard which is known as ‘bone yard’.

The Caves

The Caves is the last site on the Southern coast that you reach before arriving at Gabr El Bint National Park. The site is centred around a large open front chamber. The sandy bed below is a home for garden eels and pipefish which are shy and will take cover in the sand as they sense your approach.
penguin divers
You can also see peppered morays, puffer fish, sponges and black corals at this site. Entering and exiting this site can be a little bit tricky because of the crashing waves so make sure you are feeling very energetic before embarking on this dive.

Rick’s Reef

Rick’s Reef is located a little to the north of the Canyon. This relaxing drift dive takes you down a slope which is filled with salad corals. This site is ideal for divers who wish to stay fairly shallow and at a nice slow pace just to enjoy the terrific underwater wildlife here. On this dive you can see such great marine life as blue spotted rays, coral groupers, napoleon wrasse and sometimes even turtles.
penguin divers
This dive is a favourite of many underwater photography enthusiasts. During this dive you will follow a wall which is covered in a variety of both stony and soft corals. This wall begins at 3 metres and has maximum depth of 18 metres. After about 40 minutes you will have arrive at the ‘fish bowl’ of the Canyon where you will be greeted by all the resident glassfish.
